Christmas prep is upon us, in fact it has been for some time in the indie business world, and shopping trends over the last few weeks suggest that more and more people have started their their own Christmas shopping too. Whether this is in an effort to spread the cost, or simply a desire to get this bloody year over with is up for interpretation.
I have pledged to do as much of my shopping (if not all of it) from fellow small business this year, and I’m seeing lots of people doing the same across social media. Supporting small businesses has never been so important after this shocker of a year. For many of us this is our full time gig that we rely on to pay our bills, keep a roof over our head and feed our families. So, at a time when we are all shopping for gifts anyway lets try to spread a little cheer to small business owners instead of lining the pockets of corporate fat cats.
“But that massive online, next day delivery service is so convenient!” I hear you cry. “How will I know where to look to find those small businesses?”. Well, lucky for you I have put together a number of Christmas gift guides that I will be posting over the coming weeks and will show you everything you need for a fabulously special, small biz Christmas!
First up we’re talking wearables; think clothing, jewellery, accessories, anything you can wear on your body! I’ve rounded up some of my favourite ‘wearable’ small businesses, all people who I have bought from myself in the past and can vouch for their awesomeness.
Jules at The Silvery is quite possibly one of the nicest humans you could ever meet and on top of that she makes the most beautiful, thoughtful and sentimental jewellery. Everything you see in The Silvery shop is a real life thing coated in beautiful silver; whether it’s a coffee bean, an acorn, a leaf or even a newt (don’t ask!) beneath that silver is the real thing. Jules can also coat your own special things in silver for an extra sentimental gift and has a wealth of wonderful heartwarming stories to share about these. Check out her social media and her website to see more.
Letters from Emily
Emily of Letters from Emily is a super talented illustrator from Hastings. She designs the most gorgeous wedding stationary and prints, the latter of which she’s recently started printing on to t-shirts. I have it on good authority that she also has sweatshirts hitting her shop very soon! She also happens to be the lovely lady who designed my Lemon Drops logo and branding for me!
Baker & Buckland
Sister team, Amy and Kirsty are the gals behind Baker & Buckland and I’m so on board with their message to Be Bold - Be Brave - Be You. The girls create bright, colourful statement skirts, swimming cossies and kiddies leggings (and I hear there might be new products coming soon… shhh!). Each piece is made to order and sewn by Amy and Kirsty themselves. I have several of their skirts now and they are so versatile and comfy. I’ve worn them throughout the year, in both summer and winter and best of all they have POCKETS!
Ali and Jam from Hello DODO make a huge range of colourful, handprinted tees and sweatshirts (plus a few other bits and bobs too). All the ideas are designed by this colourful pair and carry excellent messages whilst being fantastically punny. I have a few bits from Hello DODO now (including this fab sweatshirt), and have my eye on a few more, and can certainly vouch for the quality plus their tees are all 100% organic cotton and made in a climate neutral factory that runs solely on wind and solar power, so you can feel good about your purchase too! No fast fashion here.
Sally from OmPomPom creates the most beautiful, bold and colour knitted pieces. All her creations are designed by her and made using British wool. She has a fantastic range of woolly hats in at the moment but this gorgeous coatigan steals the show for me. If you'd like one for yourself, or a gift, you better be quick as these are made to order!
